Providing helpful information for your audience and Google visibility

Connect with your audience

Why do we create content? There are many reasons to create content, but the key one is to connect with your audience. You want to be the thought leader in your field and build trust with your potential and current clients. Sharing good quality, helpful and relevant content also keeps you top of mind with your audience. The end game is to build your reputation and brand, customer loyalty and to grow your business.

Creating Content Pillars

So where do you start? It’s easier said than done! Just like with any article, you need a plan and structure. This is where content pillars come into play. In other words, key topics or main themes that are relevant to your brand and your target audience. The main pillars (themes) are then broken down further into other relevant topics pertaining to the different topic areas.

Content Ideas

From the main topics, you can start researching more details about what you think will be of interest to your target audience. You can look at your FAQs, conduct a Google search and see what comes up there, look at the queries in your Google Search Console or check out topics in ‘Answer the Public’. Of course, you may get some great ideas from here to get you started, but you’ll need to do a bit of a brainstorm. This could be with colleagues or friends. You could also check out what your competitors are writing about – but don’t copy them – it’s just to help spark your creativity and come up with what you think will be engaging material!

Create a Plan

Before you start, think about how you want to structure your content. For example, with some of my blogs, I’ll start off with a heading, a relevant quote, the purpose of what I’m writing about, usually followed by the benefits, examples or tips and hints then outcomes. Finally, a call to action – what it is that I want the reader to do.

Proofread

Make sure you proofread what you have written, then proofread it again. If you have someone else who can look over it, ask for them to take a look and provide you with some feedback.  And there you have it – your first piece of content.

Be Confident

Last, but not least, be confident! Don’t sit and ponder over your content and push it aside without publishing it. You won’t know if it’s helpful unless you share it. Not only for your audience but for your Google ranking. Try to think about how you would share information if you were speaking face to face with a customer and what you would say to them. Remember, it’s better to write something than nothing just because you want it to be perfect. Nothing is going to be perfect and you can always go back and update it to improve it, if you really want to.
